Inside Out Character Cookie: Disgust

This might be my favorite character cookie. The way her face looks so disgusted is just hilarious.

Start by making the shortbread cookie dough.

Allow the dough to chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. Roll out the chilled dough to about ¼ inch thickness and trace the outline of the cookie stencil and cut the excess off.

Bake for 14-17 minutes at 325F. Allow cookies to cool completely.

While they’re cooling, make the royal icing or use your favorite ready-made royal icing.

For the colors, you’ll need to mix 7 icing colors:

  • light green
  • dark green
  • fuschia
  • black
  • dark brown
  • white
  • white - undiluted royal icing

Additionally, for Disgust’s sparkly green hair, you’ll need Wilton’s Green Sparkle Gel.

For icing colors, I recommend using AmeriColor gel for the best color performance. I’ve tried some natural food coloring, but the image really suffers and it’s also harder to get the icing consistency just right.

Note on icing consistency: It’s super important to achieve the correct consistency. You want to water down the icing such that it will become smooth within 10 seconds after slicing it with a butter knife. Be careful of how much water you use; it’s a surprisingly narrow range. If it becomes too watered down, you can always add more undiluted royal icing.

Once the cookies are completely cool, you can start icing. Trace the stencil with a food safe marker.

Quick tip on piping bags! I recommend professional pastry bags with piping tips, but with so many colors to pipe, you can quickly use up bags and tips. I’ve found that regular sandwich/snack bags work fine once you get use to it. Just snip the corner and start icing! :)

Before you start icing the cookie, prepare Disgust’s eye lashes. On a sheet of wax paper, trace Disgust’s eyelashes with white undiluted royal icing. Allow the icing to dry for a few hours until it is fully hardened. Once it hardens, use a green food safe marker to color it.

Ice the cookie in the following order. Check out our Disgust cookie icing video!

  • 1. Pipe a mound using white undiluted royal icing on Disgust’s nose for the 3D effect.
  • 2. Ice her inner eye circles black. Use a scribe tool or simply a toothpick to smooth our the icing while it’s still liquid.

  • 3. Outline her lips in fuchsia.


  • 4. Ice part 1 of her scarf in fuchsia.

  • 5. Fill Disgust’s hair with green sparkle gel. Try to fill the gel line by line so it looks like hair.


  • 6. Pipe green sparkle gel around the black eyes. Use a toothpick to smooth the gel.

  • 7. Pipe half her teeth, alternating every other, with white icing.

  • 8. Fill Disgust’s eyebrows with green sparkle gel.


  • 9. Line the tops of her eyes with dark green icing.
  • 10. Allow the new icing to dry for 10 minutes.


  • 11. Pipe remaining teeth with white icing.

  • 12. Fill the whites of her eyes with white icing.
  • 13. Fill part 2 of her scarf in fuchsia.
  • 14. Allow the new icing to dry for 10 minutes.

  • 15. Fill last part of her scarf in fuchsia.
  • 16. Fill her inner mouth with dark brown.

  • 17. Flood her skin with light green icing.


  • 18. Attach her eye lashes and pipe green sparkle gel on top of each lash.


Allow the cookie to fully dry, at least 4 hours before eating. I like to allow it to dry overnight and serve it the next day.
